Workshops

The Graduate Research Lab offers weekly workshops on a variety of topics. The workshops are an opportunity for students to both learn and teach on subjects related to art and technology. Some of the topics covered include: sound recording and editing, video production, photographic lighting, color management, interaction design, 3D modeling and technology for exhibitions.

With various backgrounds in different technical issues the Graduate Lab Techs are also here to help. Other tutorials and helpful info is posted throughout the lab. Many techs will recommend Lynda.com for your specific needs in learning about a new piece of software.

Workshop take place Thursday evenings at 7:30pm in the Graduate Lab unless otherwise noted.

List of past and current workshops

Digital imaging and printing

There is more to digital printing than just hitting Command-P. This workshop will cover with the basics of preparing images for printing on the lab's two large format printers. We will cover the important details in file preparations, the basics of color management and most importantly how to get the most out your experience using the lab. If you are already working digitally be sure to bring some of your files to work with.

Intro to video using Final Cut Pro

This workshop will introduce students to Apple's Final Cut Pro software. We will look at the various camera options and then move into logging, capturing and editing video in Final Cut. This is an introductory level workshop intended for those just getting started shooting and editing video.

Capturing sound

Whether creating sound or video work high quality audio is essential to a good result. We will look at the variety of microphones available for checkout. The various devices for capturing sound and how to put it all together. A brief look at bringing sound into ProTools will be covered.

Processing: Programming for artists

Interested in having more control over the way the computer handles your images, movies or graphics? Want to learn to make simple computer games? Created for artist, Processing is great introduction to computer programming. Whether you are creating highly intricate computer illustration or making interactive sound and video works, Processing provides a way to dip into any of these possibilities while learning a simple but expandable programming language, and its free! No experience necessary.

Electronics I: From circuit bending to blinking lights

This workshop will be a short introduction to using electronics in art. This is a great workshop for anyone interested in adding sensors, lights, or sound to their artwork. It is also an important preamble to our microcontroller workshop (Electronics II) in two weeks. Whether your just curious or really ready to get started this is a great intro to electronics basics.

Intro to sound editing using ProTools

This workshops will cover the basics of using ProTools to edit sound. Picking up from our last workshop this one will help you figure out what do to once you have captured your sound. The workshop will cover the basics of sound editing, modifying and filtering. We will also glipse working with sound from video and basics of sound file formats.

Electronics II: Adding interfaces to your art

Who says your artwork has to sit still and be unresponsive to viewers? This workshop will introduce students to microcontrollers, a small computer you can use to detect, motion, heat, light touch and many other things. These devices can also allow you to control movement and talk to more traditional computers to control video, sound or whatever else you would like. In particular we will look at the Arduino microcontroller.

Lighting for still photography

This workshop will cover constant light sources and professional studio flash equipment. With emphasis on photographing 2D and 3D art work. The workshop will also cover the use of digital cameras in the studio environment. Feel free to bring some of your work with you to be photographed during the workshop. No large works and one work per person.

High definition video

HD has become the new standard in video. We will take a look at the details of this new format, cover the details of using the labs HD equipment and cover the complications and details of using this memory intensive format.

Special effects: advanced video techniques

Digital video allows artists to create a wide varierty of effects. This workshop will look at some specific techniques used in video production including green screens(chromakey), camera stabilizers and other special effects.
