Statement
How do we perceive others? Can an individual artist have an inherent sensibility? Can my perception of others be quantified, and how do my own experiences affect how I interpret imagery, specifically the body? I seek to answer these questions through oil paintings that depict close representations of the body. I am interested in balancing elements of intimacy with body parts that hold different emotional connotations. Whether it be through an ear, hairlines or pieces of jewelry, I wish to explore the tension that can exist between body and object or body and its parts. Expression, gesture, color, and line are all important to me in how the forms are represented, and I seek to escalate tension and emotion through the positioning of features within the frame of the canvas as well as the physical handling of the paint. I seek to create an inherent emotion within the painting’s imagery that is escalated by color choice, texture, brush strokes, or surface, highlighting specific parts of the body through mark and the opacity of the paint. Overall I hope to pull the viewer into the space of the painting and for my work to have an inherent sensuality and presence.
