Statement
Throughout the course of my life and practice I have been an artist who primarily works in painting and drawing mediums. However, this has not prevented me from exploring other means of artmaking. My work illustrates aspects of human nature from a sociological perspective. I often contemplate the human experience: who we are and how we relate to one another and our environments. I choose to express my thoughts about these matters through depictions of seemingly mundane objects, portraiture, and semi-surrealist manifestations of my innermost thoughts. Aspects of human nature that I tend to focus on the most are the timeliness of the beauty and joy that we experience in life as well as revealing what lies beneath seemingly ordinary surfaces. For example, I often portray things like flowers in their prime, knowing that they will eventually wither and decay. Pieces that seem simple and pleasant on the surface have more brooding undertones upon further inspection. Childhood joys become the pangs of nostalgia. Perfect moments in time fade into mere memories. I hope to give the viewer and myself something to hold on to. Additionally, I produce work with the goals of telling stories, revealing truths, and building empathy in mind. I feel the subjects we choose and the ways in which we depict them say a lot about us and give insight into our worldviews. Statements can be made through what has been omitted from a work as well. I keep this in mind when creating for myself and with others. I seek to create meaningful experiences that connect communities and encourage people to stop and smell the roses.
