Madi Diaz: Materiality is the most crucial aspect of Madi’s work; fiber, sculpture, and performances are her methods of seeking safety in surrounding environments. Her research concentrates on how to manipulate, reimagine, and construct new materials through the lens of sustainability.

Sarah Leiva: Sarah is an interdisciplinary artist who was born and raised in Miami, FL. She has an interest in arts education, costume design, and performance art. Some of the themes that Leiva is currently exploring include nostalgia, discomfort, love, and labor.

Collection Notes

The title, On the Harbor, derives from a nautical saying meant to signal refuge, placing an emphasis on the ways in which safety-seeking is explored in nature and in humans such as nets as a safety blanket, weaponry, and the shell of an oyster protecting its pearl. Exploring the nourishing qualities of natural dyes, netting, knits, transparent fabrics, and organic quilting as forms of defense.

The collection showcases formidable tools and pieces that shield the wearer, each designed to function as a unique kinetic body system. The emphasis will be on highlighting these structures  as powerful and protective spaces that allow for growth and flourishing.

Madi and Sarah each bring their own material-based talents to the table as they observe, collect, and process the ways in which they seek comfort in their personal lives and their practice. That same spirit of collaboration is present in the main performance as these sea-loving beings all come together to help their beautiful pearl out of her shell and into the world. We hope that this collection of collaborative work encourages an urgency to find community through those hardships, and form beautiful, resilient connections.
