Collection Notes

This Collection Cost $0 to Make is made in an effort to merge the differing aspects of rural and urban life into a collection. The collection uses materials that are both new and old; natural and synthetic; traditional and modern. The pieces in this collection are made from material that has gone through some sort of transformative process; screen-printed vinyl, cut-up and reassembled old clothes, old paintings and newspapers that have been woven together. Each garment contains elements of craft that indicate the time and care that went into constructing them. By taking some of the most traditional crafting methods like weaving, leatherwork, and quilting, and merging it with modern silhouettes, the collection is able to give a fresh perspective on what our lives could be without these definitive “rural” and “urban” labels.

This collection is made exclusively from material that is not new. All of the clothing is made from remnants of fabric, old clothing, previous art pieces, and materials that were collected or permanently borrowed. Why make art that breaks the banks? This collection is a reminder that we are all a small fraction of a huge entity so the most important thing that we take forward is understanding that our differences as individuals are our greatest asset.
