MICA Traditions and Regalia
The Chain of Office and Medallion
The Chain of Office and Medallion is worn by MICA’s president during Commencement. The Medallion, designed by Karen Klinedinst ’85, includes symbols that represent MICA’s endurance since its founding in 1826. It is paired with the Chain, designed by Betty Cooke ’46, where each link features the name of the College’s official and acting presidents, symbolically connecting MICA’s founder to its current leader.
Academic Regalia
Modern academic regalia evolved from apparel worn by monks and students in the Middle Ages. The gown is symbolic of democracy in scholarship, and the hood is lined with the official colors of the institution conferring the degree and bound with velvet of the color appropriate for the highest degree achieved. MICA’s colors are brown and gold for the MFA, white and gold for the MA, and blue and gold for the MA in Art Education.
Our Velvet Beret
A graduation cap is a sign of the freedom of scholarship which endows the wearer with responsibility and dignity. Rather than mortarboards, a black velvet beret has been traditionally worn as the cap by graduating students at MICA since the 1960s.
Honor Cords
Academic Honor Cords are worn by students who are awarded Cum Laude (green), Magna Cum Laude (red), and Summa Cume Laude (gold). The Art Education Honor Cord (light blue) is worn by undergraduate students accepted into the five-year BFA/MAT program. Leadership Honor Cords (bright blue) are worn by students recognized for outstanding leadership and contributions to the MICA community. Military Service Honor Cords (dark blue and gold) are worn by current members and veterans of the United States military.
Leadership in Diversity Stoles and Cords
Leadership in Diversity Stoles and Cords are worn by students recognized for leadership, academic achievement, and involvement in advancing the Center for Identity and Inclusion’s mission and vision. The stoles are red which represents power, energy, creation, passion, and love. The Adinkra Ghanaian symbol shows two conjoined crocodiles, which symbolizes democracy and cooperation and means Unity in Diversity. Other stoles include Asian Silk Stoles (silk bamboo print), Faith-based Stoles (Jewish stoles are blue and white, Christian stoles are teal), Heritage Stoles (red, green, and yellow), Hispanic Stoles (white, red, and blue), Kente Stoles from Africa (green, gold, and maroon), and LGBTQIA Stoles (rainbow colors with an inverted pink triangle).
International Honor Cords
The color white is associated with illumination and understanding; the cord signifies the value of the global viewpoints and life experiences international students bring to MICA.

Gradshow 2022
The work of these artists, designers, filmmakers, educators and curators demonstrates how art disrupts in the most benevolent sense, awakens us to the present moment, and contributes to our shared becoming, that we might imagine things otherwise and become more fully human.
MICA GRAD SHOW 2022 will host select on-campus and community engagements and through micagradshow.com will virtually showcase the culminating work of MFA and MA graduate students from the College’s internationally renowned programs.
Endgame 2022
A comprehensive online resource for graduating MFA and MA students to apply for and complete end of year processes. Contact Graduate Studies, graduatestudies@mica.edu, with questions or for additional information.
OPEN STUDIES GRADUATE COMMENCEMENT DETAILS
Graduate Commencement will take place Monday, May 16th at 10:30 AM at the Meyerhoff Symphony Orchestra. Additional updates will be sent to your MICA email (May 2022 graduates) or @alumni.mica.edu email (August or December 2021 graduates) from Commencement@mica.edu.
Diplomas
We’ve teamed with Parchment Inc. to provide two versions of your diploma: a traditional printed diploma and an official digital version. The digital diploma is an official document that you can share online or send to employers, educational institutions and others for fast verification of your degree. There are a few key actions you need to take to ensure that your diploma is correct and delivered to you.
Capstone Exhibition
The Open Studies office hosts an online exhibition that showcases each graduate’s hard work. The goal of such an exhibition is to display students’ achievements for friends, family, prospective employers. MICA students, staff, and the broader community.
In order to add your Capstone to the exhibition, we need to gather some information. Please review the specific program requirements.
Graduating Student Survey
The Graduating Student Survey is an opportunity to reflect on your time at MICA as a whole and offer feedback to the college. It will be sent to your MICA email (May 2022 graduates) or your email address on file (August and December 2021 graduates). You can expect the email in late April, and the survey will close on May 16.

Department Videos
Faculty are optionally invited to create a short congratulatory video to be featured at Commencement. Similar to last year, these videos should be 10-15 seconds and will be uploaded via an online platform called Capsule. Look for an email next week from the Office of Events for upload details. Additionally, we will be inviting Graduate Directors and Department Chairs to film a short 30-60 second video congratulating the cohorts from 2020, 2021, and 2022. The deadline for all submissions will be May 1st; the Office of Events will provide additional guidance for interested parties.
Sitting on Stage
Will faculty be seated on stage as in years past?
Yes, Meyerhoff Symphony Hall (MSH) does vaccination checks and masks will be required so we will not be social distancing.
How do faculty RSVP for the stage?
You can use the link below to RSVP. We request RSVPs so we can have the stage preset for the number of faculty we expect, but even without an RSVP, all faculty who arrive from the Processional will be seated on stage.
Will there be a practice run-through for admin & staff involved in the stage portion of the ceremony? And if so, when will those calendar holds be sent so that we can reserve the time in our schedules?
There is a rehearsal on the Falvey Hall stage for students to practice their speeches on the Wednesday before the ceremony at 2PM. All faculty and staff involved in Commencement are welcome to join that rehearsal.
Regalia
As in previous years, all participants must have a gown. In an effort to reduce the expensive and wasteful practice of renting regalia from year to year, MICA has elected to purchase regalia (gown, beret and hood) for all participating faculty. Faculty that did not participate in the 2019 commencement will be issued these items before the 2022 ceremony. It is the responsibility of individual faculty to store and maintain these items for future ceremonies and to cover the cost of replacing any lost or damaged items. New gowns will be purchased every 3-4 years by the College to account for normal wear and tear. Separate announcements have been sent out from Graduate Studies, Open Studies, and Undergraduate Studies to clarify our deadlines and processes around ordering regalia for faculty new to MICA.
