Steinmetz Lecture: Paula Scher

MICA presents the 2018 Wm. O. Steinmetz ’50 Designer-in-Residence, Paula Scher.

Paula Scher has inspired generations of graphic designers. She studied illustration at Tyler School of Art, where she discovered her love of typography. She landed a job at CBS Records in New York City and found her voice by creating hundreds of album covers. She later started her own business and then, in the early 90s, she joined the international design firm Pentagram, where she started designing bold, typographic posters for Shakespeare in the Park and other productions of the Public Theater. This ground-breaking work is the star of her book 25 Years at the Public: A Love Story (2021). Paula is the subject of a full episode of the Netflix documentary Abstract. She has won countless awards, created brand identities for global companies, and has presented her work around the world. She is also a gifted teacher.
