Statement
A Diary of a Sunbeam is a series of work that invites the viewer to visually partake in a meditative walking practice. The artist had made photographic documentation of meditation hikes through the woods of Maryland and Virginia, then created cyanotypes with the resulting large format negatives and plants picked on walks around the city of Baltimore. The artist is deeply fascinated by the languages and modes of communication nature engages in, and has used elaborately crocheted paper frames to represent the intricate system of tree roots in constant communication with the help of mycelium messengers. By exploring natural spaces and photographing herself in them, the artist examines her place in the extensive history of female photographers in nature. Additionally, her use of crochet as an element of fine art is a way of uplifting the historically underrepresented and underappreciated craft form.
