The exhibit represents work created over the past year. It is a collection of prints, paintings, wall reliefs, objects, drawings, postcards, and sketchbooks. I work on various types of paper, as well as salvaged wood and salvaged paint. I could say that there was an environmental imperative to this, but I just find these materials more interesting. I have trouble working from a blank slate. I like exploring the relationship between form and space in two and three dimensions. Weight, distance, silence, geometry, materiality, surface, color, and texture are of interest to me. These are things we experience each day. I think that is the architect in me. You will find squares, crosses, grids, and stripes in the work. Sometimes curves. The work is part of an ongoing process of making, playing, and discovery – asking questions and trying to find answers. Or making something and asking why. The pieces are related, but not in a linear manner. There is no chronology or narrative. There is whimsy. While pieces might have a relationship to each other they also exist as themselves. And in relation to the viewer. As Frank Stella said, “What you see is what you see”.
Finally, why the title “No Refunds”? 1. I use paint from the Loading Dock. Written on each can is “No Refunds”. 2. Making art is about creating something and sending it into the world. There are no refunds once it leaves us. 3. If you don’t like my show, “No Refunds” - Mark Cameron
