This year’s Multi Media Event (MME) is Melodrama! The MME is an annual event that combines fashion, performance, puppetry and sculpture in one event. The live show is designed, co-directed and co-produced by the artists from MICA’s Fiber Department’s Multi Media Event class. From teen angst to blockbuster, Melodrama is an anthology of narratives, romantic and tragic, capturing the anxieties, expectations, and desires of this cohort. Melodrama details stories of metamorphosis. Garments become costumes defining archetypes, materializing a common mythos, and appealing to the pathos of the audience. Through this exercise in worldbuilding, we are able to release our inhibitions, with the stage as a mediator and conduit for vulnerability. Divergent stories are grounded by the common human experience of inhabiting a body, performing a role, and living in simultaneous rising and falling action, without ever finding true resolution.
