The modern history of Palestine and Israel requires us to think about indigeneity and settler-colonization, antisemitism and nationalism, regional, international, and great power politics along with human rights and the post-World War II order. With little historical context in the public discourse, students and the public struggle to make sense of violence, resistance, political hostilities, and institutional responses. In her lecture titled, "Contextualizing Crisis in Israel, Gaza, and Palestine," Professor Kimberly Katz will address the history of Palestine at the turn of the 20th century, the emergence of British imperial rule in Palestine, Zionism and the establishment of Israel, the expulsion of Palestinians and the emergence of a refugee crisis, the role of the United Nations and UNRWA, the entry of the United States as primary backer of Israel, and what all of that means for the current crisis in Gaza.
