Through these paintings I am exploring the effects of structure on the experience of making and looking at a work of art. Before I start a painting, I write rules and conceptualize a structure around how it will be made. These rules, which determine color, form, and process, carry through various works, and evolve as time passes. Structures are important to creativity. The more structure imposed on the making of a work of art, the more freeing the experience of the work becomes. These paintings require presence in their making, and call for presence in looking at them. This being present can make us receptive to our experience and, hopefully, find meaning.
