MICA’s Open Studies Announces Launch of New Credentials in User Experience Design and Data Analytics & Visualization

The Maryland Institute College of Art’s Open Studies department is excited to announce two new credentials — User Experience (UX) Design and Data Analytics & Visualization — enrolling for the first time in January 2025. These programs are designed for those seeking to advance their careers in high-demand fields and respond to strong market trends and interest from prospective students.

Both credentials offer an accelerated pathway, allowing students to complete all required coursework within 8 months through continuous enrollment. Courses will be provided in a flexible, asynchronous format to accommodate working professionals and other busy students.


Data Analytics & Visualization Credential

Cost: $18,750
Time to completion: 2 semesters, 8 months

Credential Description
The Data Analytics & Visualization credential equips learners with the foundational knowledge and practical skills needed to effectively analyze, interpret, and communicate data through impactful visualizations. This credential combines data analytics, statistical methods, and design principles, preparing you to transform complex data into clear, compelling visual stories across various industries.

Through four carefully curated courses, students will explore the theory and history of data visualization, develop proficiency in data analysis and statistical methods, and be exposed to industry standard tools. The program emphasizes the creation of ethical, accessible, and inclusive visualizations that not only communicate information clearly but also resonate with diverse audiences.

  • Foundations of Data Analytics and Visual Literacy, 3 credits
  • Understanding Data, 4 credits
  • Data Exploration, 4 credits
  • Designing Visual Information, 3 credits


UX Design Credential  

Cost: $18,750
Time to completion: 2 semesters, 8 months 

Credential Description 
The UX Design Credential provides learners with the essential skills and knowledge needed to conduct user-centered research, create intuitive designs, and build accessible, effective digital experiences. This credential combines user experience (UX) research methodologies with practical design and prototyping techniques, equipping you to meet the needs of diverse user groups and contribute to the creation of inclusive, user-friendly digital products.

Through four comprehensive courses, you will master both the strategic and practical aspects of UX. The program begins with understanding how to gather and interpret user data, followed by designing user interfaces that are intuitive and inclusive. The focus is on building prototypes and evaluating design solutions through usability testing, ensuring that your designs are effective, efficient, and satisfying for users.

  • Foundations of UX Research, 3 credits
  • Foundations of UX Design, 3 credits
  • Prototyping, 4 credits
  • Utility and Usability, 4 credits

 


These credentials offer a structured yet flexible learning environment, ideal for students balancing other commitments with their academic goals. Additionally, students who complete either credential can continue their studies to complete a full graduate degree if they choose.
