Those considering the M.F.A. in Graphic Design may also want to consider the Graphic Design (M.A.), a one-year immersion in design principles and practice, or the online M.P.S. in Information Visualization which specializes in a different approach to design. 

Application Requirements & Procedures for the M.F.A. in Graphic Design

1. Graduate Admission Application Form: completed and submitted online via MICA SlideRoom

2. Curriculum Vitae/Resume

3. Statement of Purpose / Designer Statement

Applicants should submit a written statement discussing their design background, both professionally and academically, and outline their interest in graduate study. Applicants should address their work and goals in relation to the broader discourse of design practice, explaining what draws them to advanced study in this field. Applicants with a background in a different discipline should address how their previous experiences have prepared them for advanced design work. Please limit your statement to less than 500 words.

4. Two (2) Letters of Reference

Recommendations are submitted online via mica.slideroom.com.

5. Proof of Degree or Equivalent

Digital transcripts from the last degree-granting institution can be uploaded to SlideRoom. Official transcripts are not required for the initial review process, however, the Graduate Review Committee may request additional or official documentation before decision notification. 

6. Portfolio of Artwork

A portfolio of visual work is required from all applicants to the M.F.A. in Graphic Design. This portfolio may consist of professional and/or student design work, or visual work produced in another discipline. A portfolio of writing may also be considered. Applicants should submit 18-20 digital images or time-based work for review online via MICA SlideRoom.

Applicants should submit their portfolio materials for review with their application via MICA SlideRoom. Specific technical guidelines addressing the submission of digital images, video files, sound files and text files are available in the SlideRoom system.

7. $75 Application Fee

Payable via credit card during the application submission stage online.

8. Additional Requirements for International Applicants

International candidates whose primary language is not English must demonstrate proficiency in both written and spoken English. Additionally, certified translations of all letters of reference, transcripts and school documentation must be provided.
