January 25: Judy Glantzman
Judy Glantzman was born in Long Island, NY in 1956. She lives and works in New York City. Glantzman received her B.F.A. in painting from the RI School of Design in 1977. Last summer she showed some extraordinary white paintings from 1999 - 2001 at the Betty Cuningham Gallery in NY. Her work has been shown in numerous galleries and museums since 1977, including a 30 year retrospective at Dactyl Foundation in 2009 and solo exhibitions at Pennsylvania College of Art and Design, the Hester Gallery, University of Massachusetts, the Hudson River Museum, BlumHelman Gallery, NY, Hirschl and Adler Modern, Gracie Mansion Gallery in NY, the Nina Freudenheim Gallery, Buffalo in NY and the Institute for Art and Urban Resources, P.S. 1, Long Island City, NY, not to mention the East Village galleries in the 80's where Glantzman had a strong presence. Groups shows have taken her work across the US and to Germany, the Netherlands and Japan.
Her work has been reviewed in Art in America, ARTnews, the NY Times, The New Yorker,the Brooklyn Rail, Artforum, Tema Celeste, Art on Paper, New York Magazine and the NY Observer to name a few prominent publications.
She received a John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Fellowship in 2001, an Anonymous Was A Woman Foundation grant in 1997, a New York Foundation for the Arts Grant in 1994, a Pollock Krasner Foundation Grant in 1992 among others.
Her work is included in the collections of the Grey Art Gallery, NY, the Tampa Museum of Art, the Mobile Museum of Art in AL, the Phoenix Art Museum, the Frye Art Museum in Seattle, and the Art Museum of the University of California at S Barbara, as well a numerous corporate collections. And finally she has taught at RISD, Parsons, the Studio School, and the School of Visual Arts in between numerous Visiting Artist invitations.
February 1: Stanley Whitney
Stanley Whitney was born in 1946 in Philadelphia, PA. He lives and works in New York City & Parma, Italy. He received his MFA from Yale University in 1972, his BFA from the Kansas City Art Institute in 1968. REcent solo exhibitions have been at Team Gallery, New York in 2010, in Vienna in 2009,2007, and 2003 at Christine Koenig Galleria, in 2007 at Galleria Ramis Barquet in Mexico and at Esso Gallery in New York in 2006, 2005, and 2003 amoung many others.
Recent group exhibitions include the Tang Museum, Saratoga Springs, NY, and the American Academy of Arts and Letters, New York in 2010, Present Tense curated by Don Christensen and Mary Heilmann at Spanierman Modern in New York and The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art in Kansas City in in 2008. In 2003 his work was included in Utopia Station, created by Zerynthia, Rome for the Venice Biennale. Whitney received grants from the American Academy of Arts and Letters in 2010, the Temple University Great Teacher Award in 2006, the Pollock-Krasner Foundation Fellowship in 2002 and a Guggenheim Fellowship in 1996.

February 8: Inka Essenhigh
Inka Essenhigh is an especially versatile painter. Her earlier work is characterized by glossy enameled surfaces depicting graphic narratives, which evolved from an automatic drawing process. Inka's more recent paintings illustrate surreal environments reflecting distorted scenes of everyday life and pop-culture. She is adept at communicating drama and movement through a combination of exaggerated gestures, broad simplistic brush strokes, and highly detailed areas.
Living and working in New York, Inka is currently represented by Gallery 303 in Chelsea and the Victoria Miro Gallery in London. Her work is also exhibited in renowned public collections, such as the Albright Knox Art Gallery, PS1 Contemporary Art Center, The Whitney Museum, The Tate Gallery, and the Saatchi Gallery. February 22: James Hyde
James Hyde has been an important presence on the downtown NY and international art scene for more than thirty years. As a painter he has consistently pushed the limits of what can be a painting. His work has been exhibited in hundreds of group shows and his solo shows include Brent Sikkema Gallery, John Good Gallery, NY, Wesleyan University, the Angles Gallery, Santa Monica, the Charlotte Jackson Gallery, Santa Fe, the Weatherspoon Art Museum, the San Diego Museum of Art, Le Quartier, Centre d'Art Contemporain de Quimper, France, and the Elisabeth Kaufmann Gallery, Zurich to name a few.
His work has been written about by most of today's highly respected art critics including Nancy Princenthal, Kim Levin, Holland Cotter, Roberta Smith, Barbara MacAdam, Lilly Wei, Joe Fyfe, Ken Johnson, Kenneth Baker, Raphael Rubinstein, Klas Ottman, Janet Koplos, Jeremy Gilbert-Rolfe, Stephen Westfall, Marjorie Welish and Saul Ostrow. He was interviewed by Archie Rand for Bomb Magazine in 1998 and by Buzz Spector for the Journal of Contemporary Art in 1993.
His work is in the collection of the Museum of Modern Art in NY, the Guggenheim, the Brooklyn Museum of Art, the Albright-Knox Collection in Buffalo, the Weatherspoon Art Museum at the University of NC, the Corcoran Gallery of Art, the Denver Art Museum, the Museo Cantonale d'Arte, Lugano, Switzerland Allen Memorial Art Museum, Oberlin College and the San Jose Museum of Art among others.
In 2008 he received the Guggenheim Foundation Fellowship, in 2000-2001 the Joan Mitchell Foundation Fellowship, in 2000 he was the Lansdowne Lecturer at the University of Victoria in British Columbia, and in 1982 he received a New York State CAPS Grant. March 1: Deborah Brown
Deborah Brown graduated summa cum laude, Phi Beta Kappa with a B.A. from Yale University in 1976 and got her M.F.A. from Indiana University, Bloomington in 1978.
This year started out for Brown with an exhibition of her Bushwick Paintings at Lesley Heller on the Lower East Side in New York. Her work has been presented in more than 25 solo shows since 1986 at Tibor de Nagy Gallery and Cheryl Pelavin Fine Arts in NY, the Mint Museum of Art in Charlotte, NC, the Kingsborough Community College in Brooklyn, the National Academy of Sciences in Washington, D.C., the Shoshana Wayne Gallery in Santa Monica and the Allyn Gallup Contemporary Art, Sarasota, FL amoung others. Her group exhibitions include those held at Islip Art Museum, East Islip, NY, Art Museum of South Texas Corpus Christi, and the University of RI to name a few.
Her work has been reviewed in ARTnews, Art in America, Artnet, the New York Observer, the New York Times, the LA Times, the Washington Post, the Boston Globe, and the Miami Herald and is represented in the public collections of the Indianapolis Museum of Art, the DeCordova Museum and Sculpture Park in Massachusetts, the Frederick R. Weisman Museum of Art in Malibu, the Bass Museum of Art in Miami, the Arkansas Arts Center in Little Rock, the Mobile Museum of Art in Alabama, and the Orlando Museum of Art, Florida.
Brown has completed numerous public commissions using mosaic including ones commissioned by the New York MTA Arts for Transit for the Houston Street station, the NJ Transit, the Florida Department of Environmental Protection, the Miami-Dade Art in Public Places for the Port of Miami amoung others.
March 29: Fay Ku
Fay Ku was born in Taipei, Taiwan but immigrated to the United States at age three. She attended Bennington College, Bennington, VT, was graduated in 1996 with a dual B.A. in Literature and Visual Arts and moved to New York City immediately after. In 2003, the artist return to school for graduate studies at Pratt Institute and was graduated in 2006 with a M.S. in Art History and M.F.A. in Studio Art. When not traveling or at a residency, Ku lives and works in Brooklyn, NY.
Since 2005, Fay Ku exhibited internationally in both group and solo exhibitions. She has been awarded solo museum exhibitions at New Britain Museum of American Art in New Britain, CT and The Contemporary Museum in Honolulu, HI. Other solo exhibitions include A.I.R Gallery, Kips Gallery and Goedhuis Contemporary in Manhattan, Metaphor Gallery in Brooklyn, Real Art Ways in Hartford, CT and Sam Lee Gallery in Los Angeles, The National Performance Network Conference in Knoxville, TN and Galerie LMD in Paris, France. Her artwork appeared in May 13, 2007 issue of The New York Times Magazine and she was the subject of a short Sundance Channel feature in 2008. She is the recipient of the Urban Artist Initiative grant from 2006, a 2007 Louis Comfort Tiffany Foundation grant, a 2007 and 2009 recipient of the National Performance Network/Artist Network Project Grant and a 2009 NYFA fellow in Drawing. Her official artist residencies include Weir Farm Art Center in Wilton, CT, Artist Alliance Inc.'s Lower East Side Rotating Studio Program in New York City, Santa Fe Art Institute, Bemis Center for the Contemporary Art in Omaha, NE, University of Nevada-Las Vegas and, currently, the Contemporary Museum.
April 12: Julian Kreimer
Julian Kreimer paints in a variety of styles, ranging from plein-air landscapes to studio-based abstraction. He has exhibited his work at Von Lintel Gallery, Alexandre Gallery, the Neuberger Museum and Lenore Gray Gallery. He is an assistant professor of Painting & Art Theory/Criticism at SUNY Purchase College, writes regularly for Art in America and has contributed to Modern Painters and Paper Monument. He received an MFA from RISD in 2003 and a BA from Princeton in 1998.
March 19: David Reed
David Reed was born in San Diego, California in 1946. He received his BA in 1968 from Reed College in Portland Oregon after studying at the New York Studio School, and the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture in Maine.
A well-known figure in contemporary abstract painting Reed has had well over fifty solo exhibitions and participated in hundreds of group shows. Represented for a number of years by the Max Protech Gallery in NY, Reed's solo exhibitions have been presented at Rolf Ricke in Cologne, at Häusler Contemporary in Munich, at the Kölnischer Kunstverein in Cologne, the Württembergischer Kunstverein in Stuttgart, and the Westfälischer Kunstverein in Münster all in Germany, as well as at the Kunstmuseum St. Gallen in Switzerland and at the Neue Galerie am Landesmuseum Joanneum in Graz, Austria. Recent solo exhibitions at US Museums and arts institutions include the Wexner Center for the Arts, The Ohio State University, the Rose Art Museum, Brandeis University, the Ulrich Museum of Art, Wichita State University, Kansas, the Roswell Museum and Art Center in New Mexico and the Luckman Gallery, at California State University in Los Angeles and P.S.1 Contemporary Art Center in Long Island City, New York.
In 1988 Reed was the recipient of a John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation Grant, in 1966 he was awarded a Rockefeller Foundation Fellowship and in 1991 a Visual Arts Fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts. More recently he received the Kunstförderpreis für Malerei from the Ursula Blickle Stiftung in 2001 as well as the Skowhegan Medal for Painting among others.
" Mapping the Region" is currently on view at the Museum Folkwang in Essen, Germany, a forthcoming exhibition in Oslo Norway is scheduled for the Spring.
