Statement

Through the lens of fashion design, three garments provide additional context to the heat waves in 2018 and 2019 for the hottest neighborhood in Brooklyn. Because temperature varies so much over just a few miles, there aren’t enough weather stations to accurately portray the real temperature in many areas in New York City. In this piece, users are able to explore how unreported high temperatures are drastically affecting the community. The project also examines how greenery, surface reflectivity, and socioeconomic factors correlate with hotter weather on a city-block scale. Using Flow Immersive’s augmented reality technology, a three-dimensional data story is projected from the digital world into the physical space. Whether in person at the Data Through Design exhibit, or remote from the comfort of home, by the end of the experience the viewer will be fully immersed. The audio narratives from members of the community will leave the audience asking what they can do to alleviate the heat stress and ensure our neighbors have what they need to survive.
