Self-Guided Walking Tour

3. Mount Royal Station

Transcript

Mount Royal Station houses the Middendorf Gallery, studio, and classroom space for Interdisciplinary Sculpture and Fiber, along with MICA’s largest digital fabrication lab, biofabrication lab, metalworking foundry, weaving loft with large scale looms, dye kitchen and silk screen exposure unit.

It was originally built in 1896 as a B&O passenger train station, and now is an official historic landmark added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1976. The New York Times called MICA’s acquisition and renovation of the building, “one of the country's earliest adaptive reuses of an historic property.”

Did You Know?

U.S. presidents including Wilson, Coolidge, Hoover, FDR, and Eisenhower stopped at the station through on their way to and from Washington, D.C.

“The Station Building is the reason I chose the school. It was the perfect environment to explore sculpture and artmaking in general. It was very freeing and a place where you can make things you’re passionate about. It was a combination of the space and the tools provided. And the fact that it was renovated from a train station. It has this rustic feel to it.” - Susan Alvarez ’22, Interdisciplinary Sculpture
