Study Abroad & Exchange

Study Art at Nanjing University of the Arts, Spring 2021

MICA and the Nanjing University of the Arts (NUA) have partnered together to assist a limited number of MICA sophomores and juniors from China to attend art courses for MICA credit during their time away from Baltimore.

This unique exchange relationship will allow 20 MICA sophomores and juniors, who are unable to travel to the United States, due to a variety of travel and immigration restrictions, to take art courses either in person or online, within the same time zone, through NUA’s art curriculum.   This program is only open to those sophomores and juniors residing in China - Chinese students in the U.S. are not eligible to apply.

Only (20) MICA students will be accepted to participate.  Our agreement with NUA, does not permit additional students.  If more than 20 MICA students apply, a waitlist will be created and managed.  This program is limited to MICA sophomores and juniors only, and applications are administered on a first-come, first-served basis.  The absolute application deadline is Wednesday, November 11, 2020, 12:00 (noon), Eastern Standard Time.  Late applications will not be accepted.

Cost:  Students pay MICA’s tuition plus NUA's tuition (approximately, $3300) for 12-15 credits at NUA.  Additionally, participants will be responsible for the out-of-pocket costs associated with food, housing, travel, and day-to-day activities (academic and personal), as well as the cost of art supplies for the program.  MICA financial aid is eligible for this program.

Courses:  A list of course titles at NUA, along with a translation of MICA credit can be found here.  Initially, students will select the courses based on titles and credit to complete their MICA application.  Once accepted to the program, more detailed advising with an NUA adviser will be conducted, and course selections will be discussed.  Students will need to discuss these selections with their MICA academic advisers and faculty chair for final approval.

The Office of International Education at MICA highly recommends that all students create an academic schedule of courses at MICA for spring 2021, in conjunction with their MICA academic adviser, in the event that they cannot get placed in the appropriate courses at NUA.

Language of Instruction:  Mandarin

Housing:  It is very unlikely that NUA will be able to provide on-campus housing;  students can discuss off-campus housing options with their NUA exchange adviser after being accepted to the program.

Health Insurance:  All MICA students must provide proof of Chinese national health insurance or any other form of acceptable health insurance on the MICA exchange application.

Art Supplies Related to the Program:  All students are responsible for purchasing materials for their disposal to participate in the program, i.e. art supplies, provisions for space to complete art projects.  If courses are taken online,  students are responsible to provide the creative space and technology conducive for online learning according to the nature of the work being performed.

Applications will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis.  All applications beyond 20 students will be placed on a waitlist.  We ask that only those who are very serious to apply as not to take up the available 20 exchange positions.  Students will be contacted by NUA regarding a decision, so applicants are required to check their email account on a regular basis.
