Rosa Chang

Rosa Chang is a Korean-born visual artist, educator, and storyteller based in Baltimore, Maryland, whose interdisciplinary practice bridges art, cultural heritage, and environmental sustainability. With over a decade of expertise in natural and indigo dyeing, Rosa masterfully integrates traditional techniques with contemporary innovations to explore the symbiotic relationship between humans and nature.

Her transformative apprenticeship at a Japanese Sukumo indigo studio profoundly shaped her commitment to sustainable living and became a cornerstone in her development of the Natural Dye Initiative. This initiative laid the foundation for Blue Light Junction, a community textile studio and dye garden in Baltimore, co-established with Kenya Miles, fostering collaborative exploration of natural dyes and sustainable textiles.

As the founder of the Indigo Shade Map, an interactive online map platform that connects global indigo practitioners, Rosa celebrates the rich cultural and historical significance of indigo while fostering community and knowledge exchange. Her award-winning picture book, My Indigo World (2023), eloquently reflects her Korean heritage and Baltimore's farming community, blending storytelling with the art and science of indigo dyeing.

In addition to serving as the Executive Director of Hand Papermaking, Inc., Rosa enjoys teaching art and craft workshops that celebrate Korean heritage and culture. Through community workshop settings, she inspires diverse audiences to explore the enduring beauty and cultural legacy of natural materials.
