Dr. Jane Elkinton was awarded the position of Professor Emerita in 2012 upon retirement after having taught at MICA for forty years. She was awarded the MICA Medal of Honor in 2011 in acknowledgment of her contributions to the College.

The first female chair of a MICA academic department, Dr. Elkinton served for ten years leading the Art History Department, during which time she initiated the Art History Minor Program and developed the first departmental Faculty Evaluation Policy based on peer evaluation by committee.

MICA's first Exchange Professor at the Osaka University of Arts, Dr. Elkinton taught for one year in Japan.

An early user of digital technology, Dr. Elkinton pioneered in offering online courses; she further initiated the effective use of digital images and online classrooms in the delivery of MICA classes.

Long the department's champion of global awareness, she was recognized by the 2011-12 Art@Lunch lecture series focused on World Art "in honor of Professor Jane Elkinton, who has expanded the geographical and disciplinary boundaries of art history throughout her 40 years of service to MICA."
